Excelling as both a water retrieving and family dog, the American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized dog (up to 18” and 45lbs), easily identified by his distinctive curly, water-resistant coat. A people pleaser who responds well to training (including formal agility and obedience), he needs regular exercise, and his coat requires regular brushing. The American Water Spaniel is the state dog of Wisconsin.
Each AKC approved purebred breed has its own national club. The mission of these “parent breed clubs” is to improve and preserve a particular breed by advancing knowledge about its history, its health and care requirements and by assuring that the breed’s form and function remain true to its historical physical type and character: A Dalmatian, for instance, should be athletic and have a natural affinity for working with horses.
