Dalmatian

Notable not just for their spots, the Dalmatian is a breed in possession of impressive intelligence, endurance, and speed. They are a versatile breed, stemming from their sporting and working heritage, and are equally at home as a family pet or performing in the show ring, agility, or any other canine activity that engages their bright, enthusiastic minds. The Dalmatian we know today has known many occupations throughout its history: dog of war, draft dog, shepherd, ratter, fire-apparatus follower, firehouse mascot, bird dog, trail hound, and retriever. They have a natural affinity with horses and are instinctively skilled at following and guarding horse-drawn vehicles. Dalmatians are highly adapted to living closely with humans and thrive in a family environment. Regular vigorous exercise is a must as they are a very active breed that seeks entertainment and excitement. They do shed year-round but regular brushing of their short coat will keep the stray hairs at bay.

Famous Dalmatians and Dalmatian Owners

• Guitarist Eddie Van Halen had a Dalmatian named Sherman.
• Bradley Nowell's Dalmatian King Louie, or "Lou Dog" was the unofficial mascot of the band Sublime, and Lou Dog is mentioned several times in Nowell's lyrics.

Each AKC approved purebred breed has its own national club. The mission of these “parent breed clubs” is to improve and preserve a particular breed by advancing knowledge about its history, its health, and care requirements. They also work to assure that the breed’s form and function remain true to its historical physical type and character: A Dalmatian, for instance, should be athletic and have a natural affinity for working with horses. A Fox Terrier should have the right body size and shape, and a drive to go after vermin.

Pet owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and others with a special love for a breed become members of the parent breed club to meet like-minded enthusiasts and to support the club’s mission. The nation’s top breed experts are members of the parent club.
