This streamlined retriever has panache to spare, be it flushing and retrieving waterfowl, adventuring with his people, or participating in show, agility, or obedience rings. They are of a lighter build than the other retrievers but no less suited for hard work. One of their ancestors is the “Retriever Proper”, an amalgamation of the Large Newfoundland, setter, sheepdog, and spaniel-like water dogs. These retrievers were indispensable assistants and companions to fishermen and were regularly traded between North America and Britain. In America they were referred to simply as “Labrador” dogs, then Wavy-Coated, and ultimately Flat-Coated Retrievers, distinct from other “Labrador” dogs. Flat-Coats are known for their cheerful, affectionate natures and make excellent family pets. They are an athletic, driven breed so plenty of exercise is a must to keep them at their healthiest and happiest. Their coats are solid black- or liver-colored, protect them from the elements, and require occasional brushing and grooming.
Each AKC approved purebred breed has its own national club. The mission of these “parent breed clubs” is to improve and preserve a particular breed by advancing knowledge about its history, its health and care requirements and by assuring that the breed’s form and function remain true to its historical physical type and character: A Dalmatian, for instance, should be athletic and have a natural affinity for working with horses. A Fox Terrier should have the right body size and shape, and a drive to go after vermin.
Pet owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and others with a special love for a breed, join the parent breed club to meet like-minded enthusiasts and to support the club’s mission.
The national parent breed club is the first place for the public to go to learn about a breed or find a knowledgeable, experienced breeder.
